DIY Rope Wreath
Some of the most interesting and personal pieces in a home aren’t bought from a store—they’re crafted with your own hands. This DIY rope wreath is one of those projects that feels like a heartfelt signature nod to your space. If you love the charm of old treasures, like a worn lass rope and a mix of wild, tangled florals, this wreath might just become your new favorite craft.

Bring a part of the West into your home! This item is handmade, which means no two are exactly the same. Not all ropes are the same color – due to the original design and purpose of the rope. Add a statement to your door with a one-of-kind rope wreath. What a way to say howdy or welcome with this beautiful rope wreath full of warmth and sunshine.
A Nod to Fall
This wreath was designed for a nod to fall and the beautiful autumn season. From the orange color of the rope to the autumn gathering of the florals, oranges, olive branches, dark blues and pheasant feathers. Rope wreaths are full of charm, a little unexpected, and the kind of piece that gets people asking, “Where’d you find that?”
Ready to Make a Rope Wreath?
Here is what you’ll need, so let’s get started.
Supplies You Will Need: A DIY Rope Wreath
Gather these Supplies-
- Collect an old lass rope. Don’t be afraid of imperfections, all this adds character. It doesn’t need to be perfect. The imperfections make it better because you know some cowboy had his hands on this rope and it roped a few steers.
- Floral wire or zip ties – used to attach the florals to the rope. (I most often prefer zip ties.)
- Wire cutters
- Greenery and Florals – Choose whatever fits your vibe. Think of greenery like eucalyptus, faux branches, florals that fit your color aesthetic.

Step 1 – Shape the Rope
Gently coil your rope into the shape and size to your desire. If it isn’t perfect, keep it relaxed. You want it to look like a rope you picked up out of an old barn.

Using the floral wire anchor your rope in several different places so it will hold its shape. Keep it a little rustic. The lass rope is your base for which you will design all the florals on. Lay the rope flat to start layering on the greenery.
Step 2 – Layer the Greenery
Tuck stems of greenery onto the rope in layers. Work in one direction and let the stems layer over each other naturally. The goal here isn’t symmetry, it’s stacked bunches of texture. Use a mix of soft greens and a few wild, wispy stems. Attach the greenery to the rope with the floral wire or zip ties in several spots.

Step 3 – Add the Florals with Purpose
Start with the largest floral pieces to create focal areas. These are your statement flowers.
Next, add medium blooms to soften the shape. Then tuck in small florals or feathers where the wreath feels a little sparse. Stand back every so often and rearrange until it feels right. As you go, remember to cover the wire with florals, securing them in several spots to hide the wire or zip ties.

Step 4 – Make It Yours
Now for the fun part. This is where your wreath becomes yours.
Add something that tells your story:
- A bit of ribbon from an old gift
- A horseshoe
- An old found stirrup
- A deer antler
- Dried herbs from your kitchen
- A wooden letter for your last name
- A velvet tie in your favorite color
- Ribbon that fits in your decor
Personalize It!
Using brown cowhide that I had left from a previous project, I cut and glued it to a wooden letter M that I purchased at Walmart. I glued nail heads in places as an accent to give it a Western flair. Genuine cowhide accent letters are the perfect addition to any western ranch decor. I have made other rope wreaths and have posted them here and here.
