Foraged Clippings for Fall Decor
Forage clippings for fall decor with these easy tips and my favorite ways to display the foliage found!
Foliage that Inspires
Fall, before winter hits is my favorite time of year — and not just because it’s cozy sweater weather. It’s also a time of year when foliage starts to dry out and some truly special plants take on a new look. I absolutely love foraging for flowers and foliage that inspire me.
Looks I Love – Forage for a Wreath
Using forage clippings for fall decor in small bits of grapevine that I foraged from my yard, I twisted into a wreath and added failing stems and berries from my Honeysuckle bush. For a complete Fall/Winter look I tied this wreath up with a golden ribbon for embellishment. That’s it. A complete look that I love – foraged clippings in fall decor.
Today I wanted to share tips with you to inspire you to save money by foraging for gathered floral decor in your yard or near your home.
In my pantry a simple foraged wreath feels like less is more.
Tips for Foraging for Florals
- Shop Your Yard First! – I don’t recommend going into someone’s yard and clipping branches unless you have asked for permission.
- Be prepared – Keep a set of pruning shears and a bucket of water handy. This is to keep foliage from wilting. Most of what I clip in the fall has already dried that’s how I prefer to collect.
- Check for pests – You don’t want foliage with insects.
- Pruning – When clipping plants, cut intentionally where the plant should be pruned to keep the plant happy and allow it to continue to flower in the future.
Dry the Foliage
One of my favorite things to do with anything I forage is to dry it. If you choose foliage that isn’t already dry. My personal preference is to collect things that are already dried. However, it’s quite easy to dry the foliage so you can enjoy what you’ve found for longer than if it is kept fresh. To dry foliage, I create small bundles of each type of plant and tie them with a bit of twine. Then I hang the bundles in a place that’s dry like our garage. After a few weeks, they will have dried out and you can use them in bouquets and arrangements.
Because foraging for flowers and other clippings is free, it’s a great time to PLAY! I love using foraged stems in unexpected ways around the home. It’s the perfect time to bring in some foraged clippings to add to your decor.
